Hiroko Koshino – Contrasts in Seasons

Wednesday, May 20, 2015 - Sunday, June 14, 2015 10:30 am - 7:00 pm Open everyday throughout the exhibition period

Hiroko Koshino, active in a wide range of fields, from fashion, to painting, to lifestyle. While active as a fashion designer on the front lines of the industry, her presence as an artist always vigorously immersed in creativity has fascinated a great many people. At KH Gallery Ginza, we will present the diverse styles presented by Hiroko Koshino’s world of art for each season.

Koshino’s style is to construct her artwork as she sketches them out. In this pieces, the vertical and horizontal, and the lower and upper stratum intersect, and accumulate in layers as they materialize, fortifying their visual multi-layered nature. To an artist who continues to create artwork at her studio in Rokko mountains, the changing of seasons in Japan are perpetually a source of inspiration, and have come to be a theme in her work.

For this exhibition, we will display approximately 10 paintings, including some new pieces, themed on the variety of contrasts in the natural world, such as the moon and sun, light and shadow, and warmth and cold. This masterpiece, shown at the Mus-e des Arts D-coratifs in Paris in 2010, makes its Japanese premiere. At this venue, you are sure to come into contact with the philosophy of Koshino’s perpetual pursuit of new forms of beauty.

Akio Hirata Retrospective in collaboration with Hiroko Koshino: From a bud to a flower

Wednesday, March 25, 2015 - Sunday, May 10, 2015 10:30 am - 7:00 pm Open every day throughout the exhibition period

KH Gallery Ginza will mark the third anniversary of its founding in September 2015. The gallery’s tenth exhibition in this, a milestone year, will feature works by Akio Hirata, hat designer for Empress Michiko as well as for many leading catwalk brands, and by fashion designer Hiroko Koshino.

It is one year since the death of Akio Hirata, who played the leading role in the field of haute couture hat called “Haute Mode” in Japan for many years. He thought outside the box, creating strikingly original designs which all the while valued Japanese tradition. Meanwhile, Hiroko Koshino has given expression to Japanese aesthetics and traditional culture in the area of clothing, playing a major role in boosting the Japanese fashion world in its infancy.

In her past collections, created in collaboration with Hirata, the elegant, fashionable, and unique styles of the pair harmonized astonishingly, causing many people to marvel. Each one of these works, infused with their creators’ spirits down to the last detail and backed up by their passion, surpass any concept of fashion, projecting a distinctive presence even today.

Please enjoy observing the brilliant design philosophy of these two designers, who loved the culture and art in which they were raised, and who continually experimented in various ways in order to create a new beauty.

Hiroko Koshino Concerto of Doze
– Whisper of Fairies –

Thursday, December 11, 2014 - Saturday, February 28, 2015 10:30 am - 7:00 pm Open every day except for the year-end and New Year holiday season

KH Gallery Ginza in Namiki Street, Ginza, presents variety of artworks of an artist Hiroko Koshino that match up with each season.

Although Koshino had already used fabrics in collage or other techniques, she paused to focus on fabrics themselves for this exhibition and created a series of artworks mainly including relief-shaped ones, using forms of wrinkles and pleats. Her passion for beautiful forms as a fashion designer seems to go beyond the area of drawing and expand stories in the three-dimensional world of creation. Crystals of fabrics that Koshino had come to life embody a variety of animals and plants and eventually transform into innocent cavorting fairies who alight in the space.

A huge work and installation artworks that set a precedent for this series, which were exhibited at “BIWAKO BIENNALE 2014” held until November will also be exhibited at KH Gallery Ginza during the exhibition.

In this winter, listen to the whisper of fairies for a while and enjoy the new fantastic world of Hiroko Koshino.

Hiroko Koshino COLORS
– Inspired by Street Art –

Saturday, September 6, 2014 - Monday, November 24, 2014 10:30 am - 7:00 pm Open everyday throughout the exhibition period

KH Gallery Ginza in Namiki Street, Ginza, presents variety of artworks of an artist Hiroko Koshino that match up with each season.

In April, just before setting out to create artworks for this exhibition, Koshino was impressed by the scenery that she saw in Greece where she had been traveling. It was a street art (graffiti) that decorates the run-down wall with its surface poses a melancholy look, decaying over time. The graffiti gave the wall a vibrant colorful look.

Based on her memory of the travel, Koshino’s original graffiti art pieces that are created on art boards, are being exhibited while exercising as many mediums as she can currently employ. Those include graffiti, a primitive medium of creative activity, photo collage, and artworks with repetitive images that present design elements, and so on. Meticulously selected small art pieces among some 100 art pieces shall convey feelings that Koshino must have felt, while capturing each image through the lens of a camera. Things that have been around for ages similarly embrace old and new feel; subtle charm that passage of time can only deliver that are contrasted with vivid strong colors… Koshino’s memory and her free imagination bring you to the vivid graffiti world. Please enjoy.

At Biwako Biennale, takes place around the same time as the exhibition, installation under a theme of “White World” along with some of the artist’s paintings are put on exhibition. Koshino’s another world that differ from visual vivid ones can be enjoyed there.
